September 2025 Workshop
4 weeks - 2 hrs/week
Cuban music and Casino dance basics

The four-week session will cover basic rhythm and body movements to enjoy Cuban Casino solo, in couples, and groundwork for Rueda de Casino.  This is not a beginning dancer workshop, but rather for dancers who want to get exposure to Cuban Casino and Timba music.

Casino is often called "Cuban Salsa" outside of Cuba, though the dance form is very distinct from other forms of Salsa such as "In-line" New York (on2) or LA Style (on1) or "Miami", etc.   In Cuba, Casino is a social dance "de la calle", and woven into the culture. The dancers who are practiced and capable are invited to join the local Casino de Rueda group, danced in a circle, changing partners and orientation based on called "figuras" or moves.

Each week we will learn and practice coordination of foot and body work with the huge variety of interpretations of different rhythms and sections of Timba music.  Dancers will be challenged in a quick moving sequence outlined in a curriculum to be shared ahead of the workshop.  See below for descriptions of each weeks planned curriculum.

- Workshop classes are 2 hours each and build on the previous week's class.
- Some previous dance experience or musical training is suggested, as we'll be discussing and practicing with the measures of the music in 8-count, the song sections, and the instrument arrangements.

- Participants will receive more detailed information mid-August and are expected to practice 15-30 minutes/week between classes.
- Freewill Donations for space rental are appreciated, not required.

Space is limited - please sign up early.
Sign-Up for each week's class individually so we can estimate weekly participation.
